Enjoy October is National Window Covering Safety Month in the Tri-City Areas

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission(CPSC) calls corded window coverings one of the top five hidden hazards in American homes. October has been designated as the National Window Coverings Safety Month by the Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) and CPSC.

“CPSC is pleased to join with the window covering industry as well as safety advocates in reminding parents and caregivers to use only cordless or those with inaccessible cords in homes with young children. Cordless window coverings are widely available for sale today and we encourage parents and caregivers to look at the shades and blinds in their homes for accessible cords on the front, side and back, and replace corded products with cordless window coverings products.”

Classic Window Fashions offers window fashions to meet your needs. We have partnered Graber and Alta to provide you with superior window fashions. Following are some guidelines to follow regarding window cord safety.

Look for Certified Best For Kids Certification for your window treatments.
  • Install only cordless window coverings in bedrooms and sleeping areas for young children.
  • Move all cribs, beds, furniture, and toys away from windows and cords, preferably to another wall.
  • Ensure tasseled pull cords are short and continuous-loop cords are permanently anchored to the floor or wall. Keep cords out of reach of young children by installing and using cord cleats.
  • Cord stops must be properly installed and adjusted to limit movement of inner lift cords.
  • Lock cords into position whenever horizontal blinds or shades are lowered, including when they come to rest on a window sill.
  • Replace blinds, shades and drapes manufactured before 2001 with products that meet updated safety standards.
  • If replacement is not possible, repair window blinds, corded shades,, and draperies manufactured before 2001 with retrofit cord kits, available by emailing windowcoverings.org or calling 1-800-506-4636
Labels as above are required for window covering safety.
